Fall in Central Florida is the perfect time to update your landscape with mulch, whether bark mulch, stones, or gravel. It is also the time when big box stores, garden and hardware stores put out their steamy bags of mulch. Here are just a few reasons why you shouldn’t buy bagged mulch and instead purchase mulch in bulk, that is locally sourced.

So much plastic

The last thing we need is more plastic in our lives and the environment. Even if the bag says it is compostable, do you really think that thick plastic is going to compost any time soon?

Carbon footprint

Where does your mulch come from? Was it locally sourced? If not, just think about all the diesel it took for the mulch to go to the warehouse to get bagged, then back out to the stores. Especially if the mulch originated from out west.

Quality of materials

What is in mass market bagged mulch? Many bagged mulches come from sawmills, where just the bark leftover and scrap lumber are packed in the bags. While organic mulch contains, phosphorus, nitrogen, and decomposing tree matter that attracts a wide variety of macro invertebrates, which contribute to healthy soil.

Toxic dyes and hazardous materials

Toxic and hazardous materials are the last thing you want to incorporate into the soil on your property! Unfortunately, many bagged mulch can contain such materials. While it may make your mulch look more appealing, it typically contains fungicides. This inhibits a healthy soil system by not allowing the soil to access carbon.

Reliable Peat takes pride in offering locally sourced organic mulch in bulk. We understand not everyone has a way to transport bulk mulch, which is why we have a deliver service.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the family at Reliable Peat encourages everyone to join us in learning more about breast cancer and support those who are suffering with the disease.

Though we have made great progress in early detection, cancer treatment and finding a cure, we still have a long way to go.
