The holiday season is here! More and more Orlando and Lake County residents are decorating with colorful flowers and plants. Flowers, such as perennials symbolize new life and abundance. What a better way to welcome 2021.

While working in the yard may no be your favorite hobby, but looking at your beautiful landscape at the end of the day, makes it all worth it.

The cornerstone of any good looking landscape is mulch. When installed properly, mulch adds a professional touch.

Here are a few tips to achieve a professional installation:

Map out your mulch boundary

This can be done with spray paint or even a garden hose. This ensures it flows well and the edges remain smooth.

Define the bed’s edge

Digging a 3 inch deep V-edge on the boundary provides defines the line between the mulch bed and turf.

Clean up the beds

Now it is time to clean up the beds by removing dead leaves, weeds, and debris. Make sure you get all the roots out. It is also a good time to trim any trees or shrubs.

Weed block mat

This is when you should put down a weed blocking mat. This way you don’t have to spend time weeding.

Apply the mulch

Whether you are using bark mulch ( brown or red), or rocks, It is time to spread the mulch in the flower bed. Take into account the organic bark mulch will supply nutrients to the plants as it breaks down.

Watch out for the trees

Make sure you don’t install the mulch too close to the base of trees. Pushing mulch up against the trunk, often call volcano mulch, can cause the roots to rot and the tree to die.

Where to purchase mulch

The biggest stumbling block for many homeowners is purchasing their mulch from an unreliable source. Which can be plagued with toxic materials and noxious weed seeds. It is worth the effort to look for healthy mulch.
