Applying a healthy layer of organic mulch in the Fall helps your garden and landscaping looking its best and increase your home’s curb appeal. While applying mulch is typically associated with Spring, there are a number of benefits for mulching your landscape this time of year. Like supplying valuable nutrients to the soil, making your flowers and plants looking healthy and beautiful.

According to the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) Gardening Solutions program,

Custom Potting Soils from Reliable PeatProper mulching is an essential component of any Florida-Friendly landscape. Perhaps most importantly, it is the cornerstone of a great weed-control program. Mulch keeps the soil moist longer after irrigation, too. This gives plant roots extra time to soak up water. Mulch also protects plants’ roots from extreme temperatures by creating a buffer between the soil and the air.

And mulch isn’t just good for your plants; it’s good for your soil. Organic mulches can add nutrients to the soil as they decompose. This improves your soil’s aeration, structure, drainage, and ability to hold nutrients. Mulch can even help reduce erosion and protect plants from certain diseases

Many of the plants, shrubs, and trees, here in Central Florida don’t cope very well in our colder weather. Instead of having to replace plants, shrubs, and trees because they didn’t make it through the winter, just apply mulch. It’s a great investment!

Don’t ignore bare soil, according to HGTV

Researchers are finding mulching has significant environmental benefits. Having bare soil on your property will cause erosion and sediment runoff, says Susan D. Day, an associate professor in the Department of Forest Resources & Conservation and Department of Horticulture at Virginia Tech.

Mulching can help control erosion. Research by Day and Virginia Tech graduate student David Mitchell found that bare soil lost about five times as much sediment as soils covered with mulch.

Most importantly, according to HGTV, get your mulch from a reliable source! Individual bags on sale at a big box store are not always the best choice. They also aren’t always the easiest on the wallet.
