Mulch is known for preventing weed from growing, but with so many different types of mulch in today’s market, which one do you choose? The answer depends on a couple of different factors. Such as, what else do you want the mulch to accomplish, where is it going to be applied, and what kind of area are you mulching.

Why mulch? Any experienced gardener will tell you, mulch is a vital factor for plants. Mulch is a protective layer covering the soil. It keeps moisture in the soil, helps keep the soil cool in our hot climate, discourages weeds, and even supplies nutrients to the plants.

“Mulching is one of the simplest and most beneficial practices you can use in the garden” according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service.

“A newly planted tree’s best friend is mulch,”  said the Arbor Day Foundation.

How are weeds prevented from growing?

First, for weed seeds to grow they need dirt. A layer of mulch, about 3 inches thick, will prevent the seed from reaching the soil.

For those weed seeds that were already in the soil, the sunlight is blocked by the mulch, suppressing their growth.

Applying mulch for weed control

Applying too much mulch or too little, are common mistakes. To get the most benefits out of your mulch, it should be at least 3 inches thick. Any more can damage the trunks of shrubs and trees. Any less and weeds will start popping up.

Mulch should also not be pushed up against tree trunks. A ring or donut shape, a couple of inches around the trunk should be kept mulch free.

Organic bark mulch will enrich the soil and add vital nutrients, but will need to be replaced every year.
