The landscape around your Central Florida home is a personal expression of you and your family. Get creative, there are many ways you can add to the curb appeal and visual interest even in the cooler months. An easy and cost effective way is to add fresh mulch to your landscaping.

There are a few do’s and don’t when it comes to mulch

Do weed the area you want before applying mulch. It is important to get rid of any weeds in the landscape or garden. Though mulch minimizes weed growth, removing existing weeds saves you a ton of weed pulling later.

Do use a landscape fabric. This will block any further weeds from popping up. It is easier to make any holes in the landscape fabric now for plants and shrubs, than after you apply the mulch.

Do choose a color and texture that will enhance the exterior of your home. Mulch comes in many colors and textures. You can contract the colors with flowers or the color of your home for a bold statement.

Don’t assume all mulch is the same. There are many types of mulch on the market today. There are different size pine mulch,  red and chocolate mulch, and a wide variety of rocks.  Also, it is an important to purchase your mulch from a reliable source. Though the big box stores may be convenient, you may compromise on quality. If you plan on needing a couple of yards of mulch, you may want to think about buying in bulk and having it delivered. Not only will it save a ton of time, it is also easier on your wallet.

Don’t use too much or too little mulch. Apply two to three inches thick of mulch around shrubs, trees, and vegetables. Make sure you keep the mulch at least 4 to 6 inches away from the main stems from shrubs and the trunks of trees to avoid crown rot.
