Weeds! They are just about everywhere in Central Florida. Often knows as water and nutrient thieves. They can harbor diseases and insects, while competing for space and  resources. On top of that, they are unsightly!

A recent article in TC Palm, part of the USA Today Network, “Florida gardening: Stop the thieves-weeds are water-steeling trespassers.

Effective weed control in landscape and veggie beds includes the application of mulch. I would mulch my grass if I could. Organic mulches even out the soil temperatures — cool in the summer, warm in the winter.

They suppress weeds and conserve moisture. Replenish the mulch twice a year to a depth of at least 4 to 6 inches for best weed suppression. Keep the mulch away from the trunks of trees and shrubs and the base of the house to prevent moisture and insect problems. Mulch is the cheapest, most effective way to control weeds in beds.

The safest way to combat weeds is with a fresh application of mulch

Not only will mulch make your landscape and garden look more attractive, it will also make it healthier. It also means you will be spending less time weeding, watering, and more time enjoying the fruits of your labor.

Make sure to avoid the ‘volcano’ of mulch. That’s when you pile mulch up against tree trunks or woody stems of shrubs. Not only does it cause rot, it tends to encourage unwanted animals, such as moles and mice to nest there.

Choosing the best mulch

For flower beds, gardens and around shrubs and trees, typically organic mulch is the better choice. Bark mulch decomposes over time and releases valuable nutrients into the soil. They also establish a welcoming habitat for beneficial microorganisms and worms.

In areas that receive a lot of shade or have issues with erosion, rocks may work better. Rocks come in a variety of sizes, colors and textures to enhance your landscape. They can be more economical because they don’t need replacing as often as organic mulch and they are also excellent for pathways and driveways.
