Soil not covered with mulch is left vulnerable to the elements. Rain and wind constantly eroding the soil and causing problems for your plants.
Erosion depletes essential nutrients from the soil. Nourishment essential for healthy plants. Without this ground cover nitrogen and phosphorus are washed out of the soil. It only takes a couple of afternoon thunderstorms to wash away 80% of the nutrients in the soil.
Water is just as important as nutrients. Without some type of ground cover soil just bakes away in the sun. This is problematic because not only does it increase evaporation, it leaves your plants malnourished and roots exposed.
Mulch acts as a barrier minimizing evaporation and preventing the soil from getting too hot. It also absorbs water like a sponge.
Weed seeds are just about everywhere, they germinate when exposed to the sun. But if they are buried beneath 3 inches of mulch, they won’t be able to germinate. Which means you won’t have to weed as much or as often.
