Why Are Mushrooms Growing In My Mulch?

It can be alarming to find mushrooms growing in your mulch, but they are almost inevitable during the rainy season.  While they may be unattractive, but they are usually harmless. This fungus is mother natures way of breaking down organic matter to create nutrient, rich soil. These mushrooms enjoy the excessive moisture, to break up the fungi colony, just move the mulch around.

Will Mulch Prevent All Weeds From Growing?

While mulch is a great way to suppress weeds, there may be a few that sneak through. The most environmentally friendly way to get rid of them is by pulling them by hand. There shouldn’t be too many, so it won’t take long.

How Much Mulch Do I Need?

According to Florida Yard & Neighborhood Handbook “Purchasing mulch by the bag is convenient, but it can be costly. Buying mulch in bulk quantities can save you money. Bulk mulch is sold by the cubic yard; each cubic yard contains 27 cubic feet. Remember to apply 3 to 4 inches of mulch for a layer that will be 2 to 3 inches when settled. One cubic foot will cover 4 square feet to a depth of 3 inches.”
